Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP's)

Every year the Construction Industry in England and Wales produces an average of 110 million tonnes of waste.

This equates to around 13% of all materials delivered to site and over 30% of the total waste produced across all sectors in these countries.

These are staggering figures and ones which the Government have set out to reduce, in part through the introduction of the Site Waste Management Plans Regulations 2008.

The Regulations impart duties on Clients and Principal Contractors, requiring an outline Site Waste Management Plan to be produced for all projects over £300,000 in value. For all projects over £500,000 in value, a detailed SWMP must be produced.

Amongst other things, the Site Waste Management Plan must identify the various waste streams on the project, estimate the quantities of waste produced and how this waste will be managed. The Regulations are enforced by the Environment Agency and/or the Local Authority. They carry a fine of up to £50,000 for non-compliance.
